In Opera to a Black Venus, Grada Kilomba creates a visual and sonic lexicon that crosses different disciplines to reveal the depths of the ocean as an archive of humanity, a submerged chronicle witnessing centuries of colonial violence, slavery, wars and forced migrations that still shape the diaspora.

A “new post-colonial minimalism”, as she defines it, operates through a precise construction: each gesture, word and image are refined until only the essential remains, as if emerging from a forced forgetting.

The exhibition is on show at the Museo Reina Sofía until March 31st.

Em Opera to a Black Venus, Grada Kilomba cria um léxico visual e sonoro que atravessa diferentes disciplinas para revelar as profundezas do oceano como um arquivo da humanidade — uma crônica submersa que testemunha séculos de violência colonial, escravidão, guerras e migrações forçadas que ainda moldam a diáspora.

Um “novo minimalismo pós-colonial”, como a própria artista define, opera por meio de uma construção precisa: cada gesto, palavra e imagem são refinados até que apenas o essencial permaneça, como se emergissem de um esquecimento forçado.

A exposição está em cartaz no Museo Reina Sofía até 31 de março.

Yesterday was the last day of ARCO Madrid 2025, and what an edition it has been! A huge congratulations to all participating galleries, artists, and curators.

The Amazon was more than just a theme—it became a lens through which many artists and galleries reimagined questions of identity, ecology, and the future. Seeing this dialogue unfold in so many different ways added new depth to a conversation that feels more urgent than ever.

Thank you to Latitude for the invitation to cover the fair this year. It was super fun and a pleasure.

Next fairs in the calendar are SP-Arte in São Paulo and ARCO Lisboa

Ontem foi último dia da ARCO Madrid 2025, e que edição incrível foi essa! Um enorme parabéns a todas as galerias, artistas e curadores que participaram.

A Amazônia não foi apenas um tema—ela se tornou uma lente através da qual muitos artistas e galerias reinventaram questões de identidade, ecologia e futuro. Acompanhar esse diálogo se desdobrando de tantas maneiras trouxe ainda mais profundidade a uma conversa que se mostra cada vez mais urgente.

Muito obrigado à Latitude pelo convite para cobrir a feira este ano. Foi um prazer e, acima de tudo, super divertido!

Wametisé: Ideas for an amazofuturism

Brazil houses over 300 different indigenous cultures, speaking approximately 270 languages. Within this vast diversity, artistic production unfolds through religious artefacts, crafts, and fine art.

A growing interest in Brazil to foreground these artistic practices faces significant challenges—even for Brazilians, there exists a substantial gap between indigenous communities and urban populations. For international audiences in Italy or Germany, this distance becomes truly abysmal. That’s why this exhibition section is vital—it brings attention to selected Indigenous artists and opens a window into this rich field.

I approach these works with fresh eyes, as someone entering a different world without preconceptions. We should view this exhibition as a privilege—an opportunity to access these works anew, learn from them, and listen to these artists.

Wametisé: ideias para um Amazofuturismo

O Brasil abriga mais de 300 diferentes culturas indígenas, que falam aproximadamente 270 línguas. Dentro dessa vasta diversidade, a produção artística se manifesta de diversas formas, desde artefatos religiosos e artesanato até belas artes.

Nos últimos anos, o interesse em destacar essas práticas artísticas tem crescido no Brasil, mas ainda enfrenta desafios significativos. Mesmo para os brasileiros, existe um grande distanciamento entre as comunidades indígenas e a população urbana. Para o público internacional, seja na Itália ou na Alemanha, essa distância se torna ainda mais profunda.

É por isso que esta seção ARCOmadrid é tão essencial—ela destaca artistas indígenas selecionados e abre uma janela para esse campo rico e multifacetado.

Me aproximo dessas obras com um olhar renovado, como alguém que entra em um universo diferente, sem preconcepções. Devemos enxergar esta seção como um privilégio—uma oportunidade de acessar essas obras com um olhar novo, aprender com elas e, principalmente, escutar esses artistas.

With LIUBA and Alice Shintani, we experience almos

With LIUBA and Alice Shintani, we experience almost opposite takes on similar subjects. Here, we see a massive influence of flora and fauna, which is dealt with in completely different ways. This difference is evident not only in terms of media but also in approach. Starting with LIUBA’s sculptures, we encounter striking forms made in bronze.

It’s fascinating how, despite being rendered in a single colour with angular shapes, we can still recognise the remnants of flowers and animals. There’s something rationalist about them that it is hard not to like. In Alice Shintani’s paintings, we see similar forms and shapes displayed solely through the use of colour, often against dark backgrounds.

There are no clear lines or extensive drawings, but through her inventive use of colour, we can again perceive animals and flowers in a particular rendering. It’s enriching to see these two artists paired together, as they illustrate how artistic practice can depart from the same inspirational space yet reach completely different results

Com LIUBA e Alice Shintani, vivenciamos abordagens quase opostas sobre temas semelhantes. Ambas exploram fortemente a influência da flora e da fauna, mas de maneiras completamente distintas, tanto em termos de materialidade quanto de abordagem.

Nas esculturas de LIUBA, encontramos formas marcantes em bronze. É fascinante como, mesmo reduzidas a uma única cor e apresentando formas angulares, ainda conseguimos reconhecer vestígios de flores e animais. Há um racionalismo nelas que é difícil não apreciar.

Já nas pinturas de Alice Shintani, vemos formas semelhantes emergindo exclusivamente por meio do uso da cor, muitas vezes sobre fundos escuros. Não há linhas definidas ou desenhos extensos, mas sua abordagem cromática inventiva nos permite perceber novamente animais e flores de uma maneira singular.

É enriquecedor ver essas duas artistas lado a lado, pois exemplificam como uma prática artística pode partir da mesma inspiração e, ainda assim, resultar em expressões completamente diferentes

We’re thrilled to be at ARCO Madrid for the opening of its 44th edition! This year’s fair has a special curated section named Wametisé: Ideas for an Amazon Futurism, the curatorial team is Denilson Baniwa and María Wills.

These are just our first impressions, but there’s so much more to explore!

Special thanks to the Brazilian Ambassador, Minister Luiz Claudio Themudo, Diplomat Raquel Naili and their team for joining us this morning. We had a wonderful time touring the fair and discovering amazing new artists
